“What is Truth?”–Pontius Pilate (John 18:38)

“But Examine Everything Carefully; Hold Fast to that Which is Good” 1 Thessalonians 5:21
God made the universe and life full of mysteries. Some of them are just being discovered and some we will never discover this side of heaven.
One of these mysteries is the notion of heart energy. I first heard about heart energy when I was at a Christian lecture. The pastor who was teaching said “Did you know the heart projects an energy field of three feet around your body? Since, you have energy that is touching your environment and other people, why not fill that space with Jesus? So you can literally touch people with Jesus.” This shocked me because it sounded so New Age but at the same time, it also struck a chord within me. On my own spiritual journey and life, I have always tried to seek out as much spiritual truth as I can and walk that line between my own beliefs and those who have beliefs that are far different from my own. I attempt to seek out things that are tangible, spiritual experiences in the material world and yet I want to always be guarded against a falsehood. When I first heard about the heart energy, I was excited yet skeptical because I had fear it may not be true. Many times I have allowed myself to be truly excited about a “new finding” only to quickly suffer the disappointment of discovering the “new finding” was based on little, if any evidence. Therefore, I was excited to find there was scientific evidence for Heart Energy.
The results were that not only could a person influence another person through “positive energy” but that individuals were able to repattern his or her habitual emotional patterns and replace them with new and healthier patterns…
An interesting study on this phenomenon is from the HeartMath Institute (HMI). Director of Research Rollin McCraty wrote in the paper The Energetic Heart: Bioelectromagnetic Communication Within and Between People “The heart generates the largest electromagnetic field in the body. The electrical field as measured in an electrocardiogram (ECG) is about 60 times greater in amplitude than the brain waves recorded in an electroencephalogram (EEG)” .
HeartMath has conducted numerous studies that show that the electromagnetic field is so powerful that it can be measured not only several feet away from a person’s body but also between two people who are physically close to each other. Their findings also open up the discussion on whether practices such as therapeutic touch and healing touch etc., are and could be beneficial.
Also, the findings lead researchers to think how these implications could relate to even bigger concepts and connections. The more studies they did, the more fascinating the findings and implications were. HMI wondered if negative emotions and stress could be effected by another person who projected positive emotions and psychophysiological coherence (harmonization of different s such as your breathing correlating to the speed of your heartbeat. This term also means synchronization of mental, emotional and biological functions.) The results were that not only could a person influence another person through “positive energy” but that individuals were able to repattern his or her habitual emotional patterns and replace them with new and healthier patterns for increased emotional stability, mental sharpness and physiological efficiency (how efficiently a person’s physical and chemical processes works) and thereby, create a new baseline norm for themselves (according to the paper “Emotional Stress, Positive Emotions, and Psychophysiological Coherence“) .
The next time you find yourself sitting next to someone or in a crowded room just stop and think for a moment that within each of us there is a powerful electrical field connecting to our heart
Another fascinating study from HMI found that when researchers examined whether there is an energy exchange of heart-brain interactions between mothers and babies, that they found that the mother’s brainwaves synchronized to that of her baby’s heartbeat. HeartMath has also looked into whether human electromagnetic fields can be influenced over much greater distances. Although HMI has not definitively proved the influence over distance, they have proved that, self-regulated positive emotions can be beneficial to the individual.
To me, the spiritual implication of these secular findings are profound. The next time you find yourself sitting next to someone or in a crowded room just stop and think for a moment that within each of us there is a powerful electrical field connecting to our heart; and that very well could be connected to and influenced by that person’s “heart field” sitting next to you or around you. A connection without touching or speaking. In the way that a mother’s brainwaves synchronizes with her baby’s heartbeat, perhaps too our very hearts can feel the presence and moods of our fellow human beings. So, that as a Christian, we should give pause to be mindful to keep Christ present in our hearts and minds at all times.
